Pencil Study of a Man's Frowned Face, Study of Fright (Copy after an etching by W. Hebert, c. 1770, after a drawing by Charles Le Brun, c. 1688): detailed hatched drawing of the head and neck of a bearded man with flowing hair and mouth open in a scream, staring intensely to the left; study of a male figure. Watts's study, drawn when he was ten years old, was a copy of plate 17 in the 1770 English language edition of Charles Le Brun's "Conférence de Monsieur Le Brun sur l'expression générale et particulare," a study of facial expressions originally presented by Le Brun to the Royal Academy in 1688. The sanguine etchings in the 1770 version were produced by W. Hebert after the drawings by Le Brun.
